There are many types of homes in India. Perhaps we cant seen so much diversity in the style of homes in any other country. From Kanyakumari to Kashmir, the shape, style and structure of houses change as the climate, culture and language change. General changes vary according to the needs, financial capacity and culture of those living in the home. The situation is not different in Kerala. You can find houses of different types and sizes irrespective of urban or rural areas. This is how we know about the common houses in Kerala.
Bungalows are relatively large luxury homes. The word is derived from the English word bunglow. The house where the high officials lived during the British rule was commonly known as the bunglow or bungalow. Such houses are characterized by a large garden, ample space around the house, plenty of spacious rooms, a large kitchen, and the ability to accommodate more people.
Apartments / Flats
Apartment or flat are two words that mean the same thing. It’s just that two words are used according to American-British English. In India too, this complex of houses is generally called flat by most people. Flats are the conversion of a part of a large building into a separate house. Many families live in different flats in this large building. It can range from one-bedroom studio flats to large five-bedroom flats. This high-rise, multi-storey buildings generally accommodate more families in less space, so flats are more common in cities. The flats will generally have a park, garden, large car parking space and swimming pool. All the families living in that flat use these spaces in general. Because of the cohabitation and security features, living in such a flat is much safer than in detached houses.
The villa is also an independent residence like home. When the house is located in free space, the villa is a house with one or two floors located within it, dividing a large plot into several smaller plots. Many houses like this are located close to each other and we call them villas. Facilities such as the driveway, garden, lawn and swimming pool are often part of these homes. Villas tend to have slightly more amenities than regular homes.
These are homes with two or more bedrooms that can accommodate a typical family. Such houses are found in cities and villages. These homes will have two or three bedrooms, dining and living rooms, an attached or common bathroom, a sitting room and a kitchen. Such houses would be the most common sight around us.
Unlike conventional construction methods, these are movable houses that use other construction materials, can be completed in a short amount of time, and can be demolished and relocated if necessary. Such houses may be made of brick and wood, instead of wood and steel frames, or of roofs made of oats and sheets instead of concrete roofs. Most of these houses are found in tourism areas and businesses like a homestay. These houses are characterized by low-cost construction, fast construction and replacement if required.
